Summary: | In Malaya between 1945-1965, cataclysmic events such as the Sino-Malay racial riots and the fight for independence took place alongside the struggles of the non-Malay population in pursuit of citizenship and equal rights. Set in such tumultuous times, it is meaningful to examine how the issue of ethnicity was dealt with in Malayan Chinese fiction of the same period, especially in the light of the relative paucity of such analysis. This paper aims to provide an in-depth study of the representation of race in Malayan Chinese works of 1945-1965, in order to highlight the problematic representation of race present in such literature. |
