Description
Summary:In 2014, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore’s Museum started the “Art on Campus” initiative with the aim of “bringing art to the people”. To-date, numerous prominent public art installations have been installed around campus, many of which were created by the NTU Singapore community. This article looks at the emergence of these public art activities at NTU SINGAPORE starting in the late 2016, specifically the roles of the artists—who led the urban media platform, also known as the Media Art Nexus (MAN). In order to understand the significance of this project, the following essay will reflect on MAN’s diverse artwork chronologically, highlighting the time-based media art works that were produced. From the outset, as the works demonstrate, MAN has been redefining the meaning of time-based media art and media architecture in the public realm of Singapore. At the same time, MAN has been providing conditions for emerging artists to work in collaborative creative processes across continents. This essay will present the past and current international collaborations and touring exhibitions that are underpinning MAN’s future goals. MAN is reinforcing these projects in order to create a holistic approach to the issues of arts education for urban screens and media architecture productions within Singapore.
