The project focuses on the ‘actions’ of designers and links their actions to the ‘rationales’ they give and the values and motivation they say they have towards design practice as independents. This project shows how independent designers approach design practice in three ways and how the three approaches situate them in differing positions within the field of design practice. These approaches have gained the designers different forms of validation and form the orientations of these designers which guide the diversification of their creative endeavours. Singapore’s nascent design industry presents an opportunity to explore the organization of design work
by independent designers in the context where the parameters of Singapore’s design industry may not
have been entrenched as yet. The project focuses on the ‘actions’ of designers and links their actions to
the ‘rationales’ they give and the values and motivation they say they have towards design practice as
independents. This project shows how independent designers approach design practice in three ways and
how the three approaches situate them in differing positions within the field of design practice. These
approaches have gained the designers different forms of validation and form the orientations of these
designers which guide the diversification of their creative endeavours. |
