Land transport policy in Singapore : an insight into the bus service.

A good land transport system is essential in ensuring the continuous economic growth of a country, especially a prosperous and populated city like Singapore. Such a system entails the infusion of both the policy in public transport and private transport to achieve a balance. Considering Singapore’s most serious constrain – land scarcity, it would be wise to focus on the public transport, instead of extending roads blindly. Without a doubt, making public transport more attractive should be LTA’s top priority. To do so, LTA must provide ‘a comprehensive range of public transport services, each being developed to the highest quality commensurate with the fares charged, and which are so well-integrated that for the commuter, it offers a seamless journey’. The research methodology of this paper involves a survey on bus service 179 which operates on the grounds of NTU. The authors of the paper aim to discover the appeal of public transport through the bus service. Using results from the survey, an in-depth analysis is presented, for example, the efficiency of SBS in implementing policies is evaluated. Furthermore, it was found that a survey on the bus system does not only reflect feedbacks on the bus system. Issues on the MRT system, road usage and cooperation of the private sector are also discussed. Finally, the paper lists recommendations to further improve public transport, which the relevant authority may wish to consider. The paper ends off with the limitations that the authors met while working on the thesis and a conclusion will be given.
