Summary: | This thesis comprises a collection of seven stories and an exegesis that maps out the critical and creative influences that have gone into my writing. Set in contemporary Singapore, these stories focus on interpersonal relationships, particularly familial tensions that arise in everyday life, while exploring the themes of time and memory. In the accompanying exegesis, I put my creative process in conversation with short story theories curated by Charles E. May; close-readings of short stories by Tobias Wolff, Ann Beattie, Dave Chua, Eileen Chang and more; along with narratological approaches and other cross-disciplinary studies. |
