Summary: | Dementia is a syndrome in which there is a decline in cognitive functioning. It affects memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgement which makes it difficult for dementia patients to live a normal life, causing them to require constant support and care from family members and caretakers. This overwhelming pressure has led to many family members to resort to day care facilities for taking care of the needs of dementia patients.
Although there is no effective pharmacological treatment currently available, research has shown that non-pharmacological treatments may be effective. Examples of non-pharmacological treatments that have shown to be effective are person-centred care and game-based intervention. In view of the effectiveness of these non-pharmacological treatments, PEAR was created.
PEAR is an application that aims to help day care facilities provide person-centred care by facilitating collaboration between various care providers and helping to schedule activities for the dementia patients based on their needs and preferences. In addition, PEAR also includes video games that are tailored for dementia care.
The purpose of this project is to improve the PEAR system by upgrading the framework it was built on, resolving legacy issues, and securing the APIs. The results of this project will help improve the performance, software maintainability, and security of the PEAR system. |
