Within children’s books, illustrations might be used for telling stories, teaching, entertaining, directing, etc. Although children’s books are provided in a great variety of styles and media, the essentially one-way approach (from author to child) remains the norm. Starting from the inspirational history of children’s book history, this project looks into the current state of the children’s book industry and the limitations that define it. A multi-layered book-making project is employed that works in uniquely close collaboration with children, their families and schools. The very authorship of the book is a collaborative effort between these agencies. Its form and function is also a challenge to existing norms, with the results of the collaboration being exhibited in an art gallery as part of an installation. The whole process is a journey with passion, satisfaction as well as frustration. But the outcome successfully shows a bridge that links author to the larger world of which the child is a part.
