Summary: | Modern Nostalgia is a feature that explores what the constant and breakneck pace of development in Singapore means to young people. Although Singapore is still a young nation, urban renewal is a way of life and essential for progress, with infrastructural and architectural changes a fixture on the landscape. Many buildings and places have been demolished, relocated or upgraded to make way for urban renewal. However, the loss of certain places and buildings evokes feelings of nostalgia among young people when the old and familiar are no longer what they used to be. Likewise, local culture has changed and progressed. Thus, these young Singaporeans, who care about what they have lost or are losing in terms of their heritage, feel that their past and childhood memories are being threatened. Although they are used to the new and modern, their identity is inevitably affected by the onslaught of development that is changing the landscape faster than they can keep up with. |
