An ecocritical study of Chinese documentary films Behemoth and The Road

Since the late 20th century, a new form of cinema has emerged, called the Chinese Ecocinema, which includes documentaries. The beginning of this wave was accompanied by the strengthening of people's awareness of the ecological environment and the advent of the Anthropocene. In order to achieve the goal of keeping up with the times, human beings have carried out a series of conquests on all natural things, and the ecological environment has been greatly damaged and polluted in a silent manner. As a medium, ecocinema not only present the mystery and beauty of the ecological environment to the audience, but also spread the awareness of protecting the natural environment and serve as a warning to the public.
Therefore, from an ecocritical perspective, this paper will examine two Chinese eco- documentary films, Zhao Liang's "Behemoth" and Zhang Zanbo's "The Road," both of which were released in 2015 and both of which are about the dangers of China's high development on human beings and the environment. Firstly, based on the comparative studies of Chinese and Western ecological philosophies, this paper discusses how the ecological issues presented in the documentaries show the evolution of the "mutually beneficial" relationship between human and nature, as well as the alienation of the relationship between human and society. Secondly, it proceeds to reflects on and criticizes the ecological problems therein through the audio-visual language of film. |
