Zhang Jin Yan is a Singapore-Malaysian writer who actively advocated for “Nanyang’s Colours” between 1920s to 1930s by incorporating realistic societal observations into local literature. He focused greatly on women issues, reflecting the gender dynamics and patriarchal system in his novels while criticizing the colonial, semi-feudal society.
This thesis focuses on the 6 novels collected in Sorrowful Encounters 《悲其遇》, exploring the gender struggle of women in a patriarchal society through the perspective of women’s fate, objectification and misogyny. Following which, this thesis will further expound on the new phenomenon of women’s liberation through the lens of the “New Women” and “Modern Girl” representations, highlighting their desire for freedom and development of self-consciousness.
