Summary: | Singlish has been labelled “unintelligible” by laypeople and researchers alike. This investigation sought to test the validity of the statement and found that it is only true in some cases. Not all foreigners have trouble understanding Singlish: resident foreigners and Malaysians had an easier time with Singlish than foreigners who have never had exposure to the language. Strangely, resident foreigners seem to share the same attitudes towards Singlish as Singaporeans – they view it rather unfavourably despite finding it highly understandable. |
