Description
Summary:The Internet Of Things (IoT) has many times been proven to be the workhorse of the 21st century, whether it is to simplify and automate a process or to make something more efficient. At the same time, it suffers from factors such as high upfront cost and complexity of setting up an IoT system for an average user, which translates to a slower household adoption rate. The aim of this project is to tackle the challenges faced by IoT systems by designing a solution to allow users to enjoy the benefits of IoT in their homes. In this project, I explored different methods to achieve my aim while at the same time learning about the architecture of an IoT system and implementing it. The system consists of both hardware and software implementation with consideration of keeping both the cost and complexity low for the users. The final product is an IoT system that works with existing household appliances that are controlled by Infrared (IR), operating as a standalone system instead of having to be retrofitted into existing appliances. The system is also capable of operating at full automation while still allowing overrides by the user. This implementation would hopefully open up possibilities for many more IoT operations in a home and encourage people to adopt IoT in their households. Therefore, the purpose of this project started with the aim of achieving energy efficiency at home by adjusting the electrical appliances in a standard home according to the environmental changes. This would include actuators and sensors to be closely integrated into a system where it is capable of operating at full automation while still allowing overrides by the user. The sensors will have to collect information such as temperature and humidity. This data will then be fed to the system/agent where it will compute and send a message to the respective actuators to be activated/deactivated accordingly. It follows the concept of the Internet Of Things (IoT) where different devices are connected to the internet and can send and receive data to and from each other.
