Next, I will focus on the characteristics and design principles of a switched reluctance motor and compare its performance and fault tolerant capabilities with a permanent magnet synchronous motor to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of either machine. Followed by a look into the many existing variations on the SRM design which include different winding, stator, and rotor topologies, in addition to the implementation of permanent magnets into the designs. Next attempting to experiment and test my own variations on the SRM design, analyzing the improvements and or decrement in performance of the SRM, gaining further insight on the functionality of SRMs and how we might be able to improve them.
