A Hierarchical Energy Management System (HiEMS) design is chosen to be developed for the NTU-Sunseap project. This study is focused on developing several parts of the HiEMS and on testing the HiEMS virtually with the end goal of commercial deployment at the Sunseap solar site. The HiEMS coordinates and optimizes multiple market bids such as energy market and performance regulation market by considering a realistic Battery Energy Storage System(BESS) performance model. The HiEMS also coordinates with multiple BESSs through a hierarchical structure and manages the BESS’s state of charge values. The system optimizes the setpoint of each BESS based on their dynamically changing annualized cost calculated using scoring their performance using three criteria, namely precision, delay, and correlation. The HiEMS has the objective to increase revenue by participating in the energy market and performance regulation market and, at the same time, improve the cost-performance index of the BESS aggregation.
