Furthermore, the industry suggests a significant role to a country’s development, as it provides about 6%-8% GDP in OECD countries, and about 25% in certain developing countries (World Bank, 2018). As such, the shipping industry has been said to be a critical coordinator for globalization. Trailing the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the shipping industry is faced with grueling challenges, leading to conspicuous consequences on the industry and on seafarers themselves, and IMO has been proactive in search of solutions to mitigate such consequences. Despite the disrupted flow of operations in the maritime industry, key players of the industry continue to be at the top of their game, adapting to the everchanging severity of the pandemic with innovative and effective strategies to shift plans as the virus continues to evolve, maintaining their relevance in the field and have a competitive edge relative to others in the industry. Critical factors, such as reliability of services and delivery time, continues to be vital to cater to customers’ needs. Thus, evaluating the effectiveness and efficiencies of current operational strategies to mitigate the detrimental Covid-19 pandemic impacts on the shipping industry, and at the same time, caters to the best of customers’ needs, is crucial in these unprecedented times to be ahead of competitions.
