Description
Summary:Modern vehicular safety devices such as the three-point safety seatbelt and airbags are well established technologies aimed to improve the safety of the driver and occupants of vehicles and are already found in majority of existing vehicles on our roads. Yet, these safety systems are applicable only when accidents have already occurred. Advancements in technology and modern electronics have encouraged vehicle manufacturers to adapt new vehicles with active safety systems aimed to prevent accidents from happening. But these systems can only be found in new vehicles or on existing high-end vehicles, neglecting the majority of existing vehicles on the road which do not have these new safety features. This project aims to develop a low-cost, easy to install Driver Monitoring System (DMS) that can be easily added on to an existing vehicle capable of monitoring the condition and detecting drowsiness or inattentiveness of the driver while driving a vehicle with the Raspberry Pi 4 computer. The computer would run real time computer vision algorithms on a live video feed from a camera to detect the eyes and head of the driver. It will analyse the driver’s eye opening, closing and head position against set parameters and when these parameters are exceeded, warnings and alerts will be issued through a buzzer to the driver.
