Summary: | Roundabouts is a vital component of traffic management. At these intersections, poor traffic management leading to congestions worsens the quality of the road transport network. As technology and connectivity continue to progress, new automotive technology can help to improve traffic management and road networks. Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) has the potential to minimise time lost and reduce disruptions on the road by improving the gap acceptance process.
This research aims to study the impact on how varying penetration rates of CAVs, namely Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) and Adaptive Cruise Control Vehicles (ACC), affects the traffic conditions at a roundabout. This is achieved by running a simulation through SUMO (Simulation of Urban MObility) with varying penetration rates of CACC and ACC respectively in mixed traffic with human driven vehicles (HV).
In conclusion, this study has managed to reflect the relationship between penetration rates of CAVs in mixed traffic and the traffic performance at a roundabout.
The penetration rates of CAVs in mixed traffic has a general positive impact on the traffic performance at a roundabout, primarily depicted in the reduction of time loss and delay, while speed and density show mediocre to little positive impact. |
