Description
Summary:IMO introduces regulations to control emissions and achieve 50% reduction in carbon dioxide emission by 2050. This paper seeks to identify various innovative technologies towards IMO decarbonisation goals. Technologies related to resistance reduction, power and propulsion, and emission capturing are identified. This paper will analyse the feasibility of the technologies in relation to the challenges and opportunities that arise and thereafter recommend the best prospect. It will also further analyse the challenges arising from the implementation of these technologies. Recommendations will be given at the end of the paper. Apart from the maturity of the technologies, the main challenge that hinders the uptake of the innovative technologies is its cost. Organizations are likely to only uptake the technology if it makes economic sense, unless there are mandatory regulations to comply to. Across either online resources or interviews with industry experts, concluded that green fuels is the key to zero carbon emission. Whether 2050 goal is achievable, it depends on the content of the fuel. Despite green fuels is the driver, it will still require engine to operate them. However, technical measures alone is definitely insufficient in achieving zero-carbon emission. It works in conjunction with green fuels and operational aspects with the support of policies and regulations in transiting to zero-carbon emission in the future.
