Summary: | The report presents the evaluation of design methods for slender reinforced concrete column based on design code of practices BS8110 and EC2, and theoretical analytical methods of P-delta and transformation concept to analyze the predicted failure loads of slender reinforced concrete column. The investigation uses analytical and experimental methods to study the behavior of slender reinforced concrete columns with pin-ended subjected to short term, eccentrically axial load, which resulted in uniaxial bending about the minor axis. Buckling failure due to instability of a member of structure under perfectly axial compression and without transverse load is being analyzed in this project.
In this study, the author familiarizes the concept of slender reinforced concrete columns in terms of design and analysis methods according to BS8110 and EC2, and theoretical analytical methods of P-delta and transformation concept. This followed by editing the previous research programming codes according to the latest version of the design codes. Using the edited programming codes to analyze the data from slender columns in different research journals to obtain predicted failure load, these were used for comparison with experimental results to evaluate the design methods in the design codes of practice of BS8110 and EC2, and the theoretical analytical methods of P-Delta and Transformation concept for the validity accuracy and the degree of conservatism.
Further in depth study of the effects of slender reinforced concrete column failure loads related to parameters such as slenderness ratio, eccentricity ratio, concrete strength and reinforcement ratio were investigated with actual graphs and research outcomes from journals of other researchers. Additional comparison of predicted failure loads from other design codes of ACI, AS3600, Canadian standard: CAN/CSA-A23.3-04 and NS3473 with different parameters.
The conclusion derived from the analytical investigation on slender reinforced concrete columns that columns with high slenderness ratio tend to have low load capacity. Columns with high eccentricity ratio tend to have low load capacity and also result in high additional eccentricity. Columns cast with higher concrete strength and higher grade of reinforcement able to sustain higher load capacity.EC2 consider more conservative as compared to BS8110 in terms of the study of load capacity ratio with slenderness ratio. |
