| Summary: | Alleyways are in every nook and cranny of our neighbourhoods. However, they often go unnoticed, hidden behind our mesmerising traditional shophouses.
While they are part and parcel of our adored local architecture, when noticed, they are often than not disregarded, or frowned upon as dirty, or even unsafe, back lanes. Many, therefore, overlook the hidden charm behind their rundown façade. If one were to look more carefully, one would realise that there is more than meets the eye. These intricately cramped spaces, with odd objects and bizarre compositions, were curated from a dynamic link between user and space out of necessity and attributes of the place itself.
‘Alleyway Living’ is a rough and ready furniture series that encapsulates the notion of alleyways in Singapore, with the basis of temporariness, make-shifting and a unique sense of locality in a rudimentary approach to furniture assembly. The series spotlights unconventionality, along with the culture and community of the space, aiming to forge a sense of appreciation for these often-overlooked alleyways. |
