It follows the journey of a climber, Shan, who tries endlessly to get to the top of a mountain. Through the process she learns to slow down, sense nature and climb with mindfulness. It is inspired by Rock climbing, Chan-Buddhist ideas, and Chinese ink-wash painting. “Shan” – meaning mountain in Chinese, symbolises the main character becoming part of nature, a concept present in many Chinese paintings as well as encapsulates the experiences of rock climbers as they immerse themselves in the outdoors. This report documents the process and development of Shan, from the initial research and inspirations to the concept, visual development, and production.
