Summary: | The rate of people moving from rural areas to urban areas is increasing rapidly over the years. The reason for people to move is most likely to pursue a better living environment. However, as increasing people live in an environment, the competition for resources such as jobs is getting more intense, and similarly for limited resources such as land. In order to better design an urban system, urban intensity and density have to be measured. Urban intensity refers to the rate at which urban activities are occurring, and thereby the demand for urban services, such intensities are difficult to measure and thus proxies are often used. The objective of this study is to observe and measure the urban intensity of every planning area in Singapore by using employment data. This study is focused on the employment data and population data in 2015. Heatmaps will also be generated by using QGIS 3.0 software to facilitate in visualizing the intensity of the planning areas. Data used comes from the employment data partially available for the planning areas, and the remaining comes from the estimation by using the weightage of population data. In the end, this study indicates that Tampines, Jurong West, Bedok, Woodlands, Yishun, and Sengkang are the planning areas where most employed people over all the working industries reside in Singapore. |
