Description
Summary:The purpose of this Final Year Project is to analyse the mechanical properties and characteristics of a functionally graded rod. Theoretical and analytical solutions are derived for homogenous and bi-layered cylinders undergoing the effects of pure torsion, combined torsion – tension loading and combined torsion – compression loading. The stress curves of different gradients are studied to discover its effect on not only multi-layered cylindrical entities, but also purely homogenous ones as well, and ultimately, discuss and compare the magnitude of the effects of the different gradients of the cylindrical entity. The stresses are formulated to form the Piola-Kirchoff stress tensor and computed using Wolfram Mathematica software. The results show that different gradients give rise to different behaviours of a cylinder compared to a homogenous cylinder which has mostly constant behavious throughout the radius. This study allows for the better understanding of different gradient behaviours and finding the optimal gradient for the best efficiency.
