Summary: | Decellularization of the oesophagus for the surgical procedure of esophagectomy has been identified to be both an expensive and an environmentally unfriendly procedure.
This study aims to investigate the recyclability of Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS) solutions after the decellularization of a porcine oesophagus. In addition, this study allows aims to investigate the possibility of reducing the quantity of SDS solution required per oesophagus by recirculating the recycled waste solution.
Data gathered from a conventional vertical decellularization procedure was utilised to develop a working prototype to recycle waste SDS solution. The prototype features Ultraviolet (UV) sterilisation and Mechanical Filtration methods to remove any debris and cells found in the waste SDS solution. The prototype was able to decellularize an oesophagus independently of itself without the need for human intervention.
Samples gathered from the prototype were tested using chemical and biological means to determine the effectiveness of the prototype. Results attained at the end of the project suggest that the recyclability of waste SDS solution is feasible. |
