Behavior and strength of slender high strength concrete columns

The objective of this report is to study the behavior and strength of slender high strength concrete (HSC) columns analytically. These columns are pin-ended and subject to short-term eccentric loading about the minor axis. Data has been obtained from the research of Lloyd and Rangan, RH Basappa Sett...

Teng Susanto School of Civil and Environmental Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Civil engineering::Structures and design The objective of this report is to study the behavior and strength of slender high strength concrete (HSC) columns analytically. These columns are pin-ended and subject to short-term eccentric loading about the minor axis. Data has been obtained from the research of Lloyd and Rangan, RH Basappa Setty and BV Rangan, and Jae-Hoon Lee and Hyeok- Soo Son. The column sizes of the data various from 120mm x 120mm, 300mm x 100mm and 175mm x 175mm and with different length. The compressive strength of the concrete was 58MPa, 70.4MPa, 92MPa, 93.2MPa and 97MPa. The eccentricities of axial thrust were 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 45, 50 or 65mm. Current codes of practice (EC2-2004 and ACI 318-08) are used to predict the strength of columns and failure load. The comparisons are made between the predicted failure load and test failure load to conclude the accuracy of the codes. Finally, the result of analysis show that ACI and EC2 provided conservative prediction on the strength of concrete and the prediction of ACI is more conservative because it tends to provide close estimation when compare with the test strength.
