Description
Summary:This paper, through the case studies and quantitative methods, investigates the causal links between ASEAN states’ political relations with China and their acceptances to Chinese 5G. At first, through textual analyses and scoring methods, a generally positive correlation was established between ASEAN states’ political relations with China and their acceptances to China’s 5G. Next, a fundamental variable, ASEAN states’ digital development mode, was controlled by PCA approach to select out the cases of Cambodia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Lastly, through the examination of three cases, it was found that the ASEAN states’ political relations with China could influence their acceptances to China’s 5G by affecting the governments and corporates’ political and security risk perceptions. This study complements with the previous studies about the U.S.’s pressure on ASEAN’s response to China’s 5G and the ASEAN’s political strategies in Chinese 5G issues, which can provide some policy insights for states’ oversea 5G strategy making. Besides, this research also provides some methodological references for quantification of ASEAN states’ political relations with China and their acceptances to Chinese 5G, as well as for quantitative methods’ use in case selections and illustrations.
