Zhong Wende School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Network Technology Research Centre DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering::Optics, optoelectronics, photonics The wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) is an attractive solution of the future access network as it offers many advantages including large capacity, easy management, network security and upgradability. Conventional WDM-PON typically only supports for the virtual point-to-point connectivity, and it is not suitable for the delivery of broadcasting services. However, to meet the emerging internet services, diverse services need to be supplied such as video-on-demand and multimedia broadcasting. The main objective of this report is to propose a cost-effective scheme providing of broadcasting services in a WDM-PON network. Firstly, literature reviews on different forms of passive optical networks will be reported with emphasis on WDM-PON, and studies some important components used in WDM-PONs. Secondly, this report proposes a new architecture providing broadcasting services in the WDM-PON by making use of the cyclic property of AWG router in the remote node. The architecture is based on the downstream subcarrier modulation and carrier reuse upstream transmission architecture, which is quite cost-effective. The feasibility of the proposed architecture is verified by a professional simulation tool – OptiSystem. Lastly, the network performances, power penalty, and colourless operation of this proposed architecture are investigated and discussed.
