Summary:Construction and demolition (C&D) waste generation has been greater than before over the past few years due to increasing construction activities. As there are limited land resources in Singapore and that C&D waste cannot be combusted easily, recycling and reusing C&D waste should be continuously explored in solving this problem. In this study, the feasibility of incorporating recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in hot-mix asphalt (HMA) application was investigated. It involved a hybrid mix design of 27% RCA replacement (W3B-R27) blended in accordance to Singapore Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) W3B mix gradation. Bituminous binder of 60/70 penetration grade was used in the fabrication of the hybrid mix. Optimum binder content was determined using the Marshall mix design method and was found to be 5.3% for W3B-R27. Test specimens obtained from the slabs were used for performance tests such as the Resilient Modulus Test and the Beam Fatigue Test. The beam specimens did not provide sufficient information regarding the fatigue life of the hybrid mix though the hybrid specimens were found to be stiffer and more ductile than W3B-R27. W3B-R27 cored specimens exhibited relatively good resilient modulus (MR) results as compared to W3B conventional cored specimens. The results obtained in this study suggested feasible RCA usage in HMA applications.
