Summary: | What is the “new normal”, and how can Southeast Asia better prepare for and cope with it? This chapter provides an introduction to the monograph, which seeks to shed light on this overarching question, with a focus on non-traditional security (NTS) issues. NTS issues are defined by the Consortium of Non-Traditional Security Studies in Asia as “challenges to the survival and well-being of peoples and states that arise primarily out of nonmilitary sources”, with examples including “climate change, cross-border environmental degradation and resource depletion, infectious diseases, natural disasters, irregular migration, food shortages, people smuggling, drug trafficking, and other forms of transnational crime”. |
