This is carried out via a survey with terminal operators, stevedores and port authorities. Information obtained is then cross-referenced with secondary sources to analyse and identify the underlying trends. The information from the two sources are analysed with respect to the different aspects of vertical integration between the two entities. The attributes analysed are the factors influencing the choice of investment and management, exclusivity of Dedicated Container Terminal (DCT) arrangements, the reasons, costs and risks involved and lastly, the effects of DCTs on terminal productivity and profitability. In addition, the study pays emphasis on the nature of investment and management made by the shipping lines. The analysis include analysing the most popular form of investment and management methods adopted as well as identifying any inherent differences between regions such as North America and Europe, which may affect how the vertical integration is carried out.
