Summary: | This report is intended to introduce Open Source GIS to the readers. After introducing some back ground information about Open Source and GIS such as the definition and history, a detailed introduction and comparison of Open Source GIS software and proprietary GIS software will be given. In the comparison, advantages of Open Source GIS software over proprietary GIS software will be discussed. The Open Source GIS software included in this paper are: GRASS, QGIS, uDig and MapWindow GIS. A brief history of the software as well as the basic functions of the software, the target user level and the specialty about the software will be introduced. Comparison of the four software is also included to help reader choose the best software that fits the job. And in the conclusion part I will talk about why should we choose Open Source over proprietary. After reading this report, readers will have a good understanding of what is Open Source GIS software and what is so special about it. |
