Ting Seng Kiong School of Civil and Environmental Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Civil engineering::Construction technology In the world, construction and demolition waste constitutes to a major portion of the total solid waste production and concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials. As there’s an increasing concern on environmental awareness, the concept of using recycled aggregate for making concrete, which is a more environmentally friendly approach, is getting more and more popular in the construction industry. These recycled aggregates are mainly obtained from the destruction of buildings. Although the properties of recycled aggregates are much inferior to those of natural aggregates, research by engineers indicates the possibility and potential in extensive usage of concrete made from recycled aggregates. To make such application feasible, the qualities and the properties of the concrete made from recycled aggregates must first be assured. In this project, the bulk of the experiment conducted is mainly based on the effects of recycled fine aggregates on the properties of hardened concrete. The compression and tensile strength of the concrete is discussed with different percentage of recycled fine aggregates replacement as the variable. The durability of the concrete is also assessed through the density and water absorption test of the hardened concrete mix. Further experiment is carried out to replace natural coarse aggregates with recycled coarse aggregates and examined the strength of the concrete. Chemical tests such as chloride and sulfate test is also carried out to compare the extent of chloride attack n sulfate attack of concrete made from recycled aggregates and of those from natural aggregates.
