The more common ones are the computer uninterruptible power supply system and its main function is to restore electricity when there is power outage. Major companies which require data storage such as banks and telecommunication industries spend a lot of money on uninterruptible power supply system and are heavily dependent on it so that no important information is lost due to power shortage. In this project, the area of energy storage will be look into. The common method of energy storage in the market is using chemical cells or batteries but this method has limited lifespan and it usually incurs high cost. Therefore, another alternative of energy storage is being studied here, flywheel energy storage. This method is a mechanical means of storing energy and has been studied in many researches over the past years. It is not something new and there are a lot of flywheel uninterruptible power supply systems in the market but the cost of owning one unit is extremely expensive. Thus the majority still stick to using chemical cells for energy storage. A flywheel energy storage prototype will be constructed and some aspects of energy storage will be studied, such as safety, cost and reliability. Studying of these areas will provide us with information on how efficient flywheel energy storage system works and how we can implement or modify the flywheel energy storage to suit the common market. In conclusion, this project aims to provide a view into flywheel energy storage and its usefulness. It is determined to be able to attain the objectives within given means and parameters. Uninterruptible power supply system has become an important part of our life and is greatly used by the general public.
