Design and development of an automated labelling machine

NTU, in collaboration with NEA, designed and built an automated masking tape sealing machine and transparent tape sealing machine to replace the manual sealing process. The masking tape sealing machine is used to seal off the bottle with a layer of masking tape to prevent it from leaking. The transp...

The masking tape sealing machine is used to seal off the bottle with a layer of masking tape to prevent it from leaking. The transparent tape-sealing machine is used to transfer a printed label onto the bottle followed by a layer of transparent tape to secure the label. As the bottles are not of industry standard size, there is no single machine available in the market that fulfils all requirements. Hence a conceptual design process had to be carried out. Upon completion of assembly and troubleshooting the proto-type machines, it was placed under a two-day on-site trial run whereby valuable feedbacks were collected, the feedbacks were studied thoroughly and the machine design would be re-evaluate, if needed, to improve the machine efficiency and reliability to a higher rating. This report will cover the overall flow of the sealing process followed by the conceptual design of the machines. Assembly and troubleshooting will be discussed in details. Re-evaluation of the process based on the feedback obtained during the trial test will be explained. The proposal of new design or improvement to further increase the performance and reliability of the machine will be presented.
