We retrospectively searched the departmental database for all cases of cardiac tumours reported during the study period. Pericardial diseases were excluded. Reports and slides of all cases were retrieved and reviewed. The data is subsequently entered and analysed. A review of the literature was also performed. There were a total of 52 cases, of which 46 were benign and 6 were malignant tumours. Overall age distribution of cardiac tumours ranged from 18 to 79 years, with a mean age of 54 years, with slight female predominance. The benign cases included 42 myxomas, 3 papillary fibroelastomas, and 1 lipoma. Cardiac myxomas were also more common in females, more common on the left side than right, and showed an annual incidence of 3.5. Malignant tumours involving the heart included 2 lymphomas, 1 renal cell carcinoma, 1 sarcoma, 1 hepatocellular carcinoma and 1 liposarcoma. Although limited by exclusion of paediatric cases and often incomplete availability of clinical information, our results provide a fairly comprehensive epidemiological and pathological description of cardiac myxomas, comparable to those described in literature.
