Description
Summary:Underwater communication via Electromagnetic (EM) waves can provide many advantages as compared to traditional acoustic waves. EM waves propagate faster with higher bandwidth than acoustic waves thereby shortening transmission timing and increasing data bit with less interference and loss of signals. These advantages will allow real-time information transfer both underwater and potentially across two mediums for underwater-surface communication. With an increasing demand for underwater activities such as Autonomous Underwater vehicles (AUVs), Scuba Diving, recreational submariners, etc, there is a need for high speed and high bitrate data transfer for communication or wireless remote control. The visible light spectrum, especially the blue and green wavelength, has been identified as the most viable wavelength for underwater data transmission for salt water. This is due to attenuation and absorption that happen underwater. Smart transmitters and receivers are required to be employed to facilitate data transfer with the consideration for material that is photosensitive. These would require financial investment before employment which could be a factor in these technologies.
