Summary: | Singapore is a highly advanced developing country that faces a low total fertility rate. This low fertility rate is a result of delayed marriages and increasing singlehood within the population. Other population concerns that affect Singapore are an ageing population, high immigration rates and high population density. A survey was conducted among young adults to understand their perceptions of marriage and childbirth. The younger generation value the institution of marriage and their perceptions match the behaviour of society. The respondents were willing to have children but are discouraged by the high costs involved in raising children. |
