Summary: | Passive learning is a teacher-centered style of learning. One common example is lectures, where passive learners may quietly assimilate information from the instructor without typically engaging with the learning experience. It is efficient in terms of imparting a great deal of knowledge within a short amount of time and is widely adopted in higher education today. However, its nature of one-way communication and lack of engagement and reflection of understanding can lead to short-term memory retention for students. Students are also provided with limited opportunities to assess their understanding for the materials.
In contrast, active learning is a learner-centered mode of learning, where students are actively involved in the learning process instead of being passive receivers. Through active learning, students’ ability to retain and apply information can be enhanced, which in return help them build confidence and stay motivated.
This project aims to develop a practice platform for the module Engineering Mathematics II, where students are allowed to work on plenty of practice questions, receive analytical feedback, and make use of aggregated online resources to facilitate their learning. This platform is meant to complement current lecture-based teaching method, promote students’ active learning and help them take initiative in studies. |
