Description
Returned overseas Chinese writer Chen Canyun once lived in Nanyang for a period. He went to Singapore in 1941 and intended to teach at Nan Chiau Teachers' Training College. Afterwards he experienced the brutal Japanese rule and visited Malaya during that period. In 1943, he overcame various hardships and made his way back to China after traveling through a few nations in Nanyang. This thesis will investigate Chen Canyun's Nanyang imagination in his works using five of his literary works as examples, which are “Zou Chu Ma Lai Ya”, “You Yu De Mei Gong He”, “Nan Yang Bo Huan Xiang Ji”, “Yi Guo Xiang Qing”, and “Re Dai Jing Tao Lu”. After returning to China, Chen Canyun was inspired to write numerous realistic works on “Nanyang” and “overseas Chinese” subjects because of his profound experiences during the war of resistance against Japan in Nanyang. Based on his own experience, Chen Canyun used documentary writing techniques to depict the Nanyang customs, the brutality of the colonists, the various characteristic of characters and their destinies, and so on. In addition, Chen Canyun's Nanyang writing also invisibly portrays a community belonging to Nanyang. Whether they were local natives or overseas Chinese, they gathered as a community with the same fate under the ruthless authority of the colonizers and shared common beliefs and emotions.
