Lim, Sean Yew Kian Shin, Eunsoo Thian, Vincent Chuan Keng Akshar Saxena School of Social Sciences aksharsaxena@ntu.edu.sg Social sciences::Economic development::Singapore Objective: Due to limited research on policies associated with the health risks of consuming prepackaged sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), the study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the front-of-package (FOP) labelling system among youths in Singapore, and recommend potential solutions or strategies to raise awareness and improve the effectiveness of the government’s campaign against diabetes. Methods: The study conducted an online survey questionnaire among the youths in Singapore to understand more about their SSBs consumption, and their perspectives on the FOP labelling system being implemented by the government. In one of the sections, the survey was divided into three different arms, namely, the Nutri-grade labelling (eg. Grades A, B, C, D), the sugar content, and the potential health risks, and respondents will be randomly presented with one of the arms. The treatment variable of the label type will impact the outcome variable of the difference in total weekly consumption, accounting for the control variables. Results: There is a general increase in the consumption of beverages of all gradings. It is relatively easier to encourage healthy behaviour as compared to discourage unhealthy behaviour. The effect is limited to Grade A and C beverages and is not significant in Grade B and Grade D beverages. Conclusion: The study examined Nutri-Grade's effectiveness in promoting healthier beverage consumption in Singapore. The government's efforts are highlighted, as is the need for individual and family support. However, despite the Nutri-Grade rating system, the success of Nutri-Grade is dependent on it being part of a larger strategy that promotes healthy food as delicious, as consumers may still prioritize taste over health.
