DC-modulated single stage power factor correction AC/AC converter
Traditional AC to AC converters are implemented using voltage regulation technique. However, this method contains several shortcomings like low power factor, high total harmonic distortion and distorted output waveform. In this report, power factor correction using DC to DC conversion technique...

However, this method contains several shortcomings like low power factor, high total harmonic distortion and distorted output waveform. In this report, power factor correction using DC to DC conversion technique is explored and implemented into AC to AC converters. Boost and Buck-Boost topologies are comprehensively explored. Power factor has effectively improved to near unity with minimal total harmonic distortion and high power transfer efficiency of up to 98%. Recommendations on using series LC filter to extract the switching harmonics and on using hysteresis current control to minimize phase shift due to load variations are also proposed. With future improvement on the DC-modulated AC to AC conversion technology, this technique is anticipated to replace the common thyristor-switched voltage controller and would be widely utilized in industrial applications.
