Description
Summary:This paper reports an experimental investigation into the material properties and compression capacities of S690 high strength steel welded π-section and cruciform section stub columns. The experimental programme was conducted on five welded S690 high strength steel π-section and five welded S690 high strength steel cruciform sections, and included material tensile coupon tests, initial local geometric imperfection measurements, and twenty concentrically loaded stub column tests. The key obtained test results, including the failure loads and deformations at the failure loads, the load-end shortening curves and failure modes, were fully reported and discussed. The obtained experimental data was then used to assess the accuracy of the design rules for S690 high strength steel welded π-section and cruciform section stub columns, as given in the European code EN 1993-1-12. The assessment results showed that the established local buckling design rules in the European code led to accurate and consistent predictions of cross-section compression resistance for both non-slender and slender S690 welded π-section and cruciform section stub columns.
