Cell and bacteria adhesion on layer-by-layer assembly of dextran/chitosan multilayers.

In this work,dextran/chitosan multilayer were built via layer by layer assembly through Schiff base reaction. The LbL process was monitored through UV- vis absorption spectrometry and advancing contact angle measurement while the wettability of the functionalized glass surfaces was investigated by using water contact angle measurement. The films were then tested for their ability to limit bacterial and cell adhesion. The results revealed that the dextran/chitosan multilayers were indeed able to limit cell and bacterial adhesion due to their anti-adhesive and contact active bacterial killing characteristics. The film exhibited increased cell and bacterial resistance with increasing bilayers, probably due to increased interpenetration of the chitosan and dextran polymer chains.
