Study of remanufacturing of plug valve

The importance of slurry erosion resistance in the oil and gas industry cannot be overstated. Slurry erosion occurs when solid particles suspended in a fluid (typically called a slurry) impact a surface at high velocity, leading to material loss and damage. This can cause premature equipment f...

Slurry erosion occurs when solid particles suspended in a fluid (typically called a slurry) impact a surface at high velocity, leading to material loss and damage. This can cause premature equipment failure, reduced productivity, and increased maintenance costs. The cement slurry causes Abrasion, Erosion and Corrosion within the inner walls of the pipe. These damage mechanisms synergize causing a worse degradation of surface integrity, tearing away at the overall lifecycle of the component. A major component that faces Slurry Erosion in the oil and gas industry is the Plug Valve. These plug valves get worn out easily due to its high usage whilst handling the abrasive cement slurry, which leads to expensive repairs, non-productive time (NPT) and harmful environmental effects. In Schlumberger alone, losses estimate to about $500,000 per year from just replacing the plug valve. In order to mitigate the effects of slurry erosion, the use of materials such as alloys with high erosion resistance can significantly improve the durability and reliability of equipment in the oil and gas industry. This project will be focuses on decreasing the Material and Supply (M&S) spent on the plug valve through the improving of its overall service life of the plug valve. This can be achieved through choosing a new material, surface hardening techniques and coating techniques to build bulk and repair worn-out components. In summary, the importance of slurry erosion resistance in the oil and gas industry is critical for ensuring the longevity and reliability of equipment, reducing maintenance costs, and minimizing production downtime.
