Summary: | Hazardous Classifications are being used extensively around the world today especially in the oil and gas industry. One wrong mistake on the classification for purchasing the right equipment for a classified location can have a drastic effect; from heavy losses to even lost of lives.
Presently, there are two main hazardous classification standards in use, the IEC/ATEX convention and the NEC convention. However, the classification itself can be broken down into parts, which are defined by the respective standards. In order to understand a classification, one may have to refer to the respective directive or refer to manuals, which can be time consuming and sometimes even misleading.
In order to aid in understanding these classifications, a database consisting of all the definitions for all parts of the classification is required; complete with a program that can break down the classification keyed in to its individual components and having the definitions drawn out and displayed from the database. To further aid users, the program is also able to check if the equipment classified is suitable for installation in the given area.
This report covers the research done on the hazardous classification standards and the steps taken in designing the program. The program is created using java script as it can be easily incorporated into a web-based media that allows for easy accessibility.
Besides the research and programming, this report also covers a real life example where classifications of equipment is being taken and tested against the area classification for suitability to test the program functionality. |
