It is important as it aims to achieve the lowest possible cost while maintaining a high efficiency of the operation of the power system. In efforts to solve the economic dispatch problem, this research paper seeks to focus on a hierarchical decentralized approach to the economic dispatch problem. Generally, the approach for the economic dispatch issue is handled in a centralized manner however, this usually results in a high computational cost when it comes to a larger power system. Compared to the traditional method of centralized approach, the hierarchical decentralized approach first start with problem formulation. Upon problem formulation, it breaks down each of the components into their own local sub-problems. The constraint and cost function are then set to be solved iteratively in each local generator. An extra coordinator is then introduced to coordinate between each local agents and to take care of the global constraint. By doing so, the hierarchical decentralized algorithm aims to minimize the cost and obtain maximum efficiency by reducing the computational power and complexity compared to the traditional centralized method. In this research paper, case studies performed on the IEEE-30 Bus system shall be discussed along with the hierarchical decentralized approach.
