Description
Summary:This report reviews the Modelling & Simulation of the Umbilical Cable Control of a Winch. An umbilical cable is widely used in industry to release and wind up a length of cable, and the cable is often required to be wound up neatly to avoid damaging the cables. Cable spooling devices (CSDs) are often used in tandem with winches to assist in the spooling process. However, even with the use of such a device, misalignment of the cable may still occur. Human intervention may be required to rectify the problem, which is a potential safety hazard. This prompts the need to develop a solution to prevent misalignments from occurring and to allow early detection or automated rectification to improve safety standards. A literature review into available designs and systems in the industry is conducted to identify their advantages and disadvantages. A prototype model is then used to replicate the problem. Possible experimental solutions are applied to the prototype to analyze their effectiveness and feasibility. These solutions can then be implemented on an actual winch to improve its operation.
