Description
Summary:Vortex-ring collisions with cylinders of D/d = 4, 2 and 1 are simulated. The study was conducted numerically in Ansys Fluent using the LES turbulence model. The temperature difference between the cylinder and the surrounding fluid was 60K to keep temperature variations visible in the visualisations done in Paraview. The vortex dynamics, vorticity, pressure distribution and heat transfer behaviour were evaluated in this investigation. Starting with vortex-ring Reynolds number of 2000, the changes in vortex dynamics when Reynolds number is halved was analysed. For deeper insights, the vorticities were mapped, which gave clarity to the trajectories of the primary, secondary and tertiary vortex-rings. The vorticities were then related to the pressure distribution across the cylinder surface at the same plane. By mapping the vortex dynamics by temperature, the heat transfer performance was evaluated.
