Chua Hock Chuan School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering::Wireless communication systems With new evolution of wireless telecommunication technologies, people are exploring ways to make full use of the technologies to develop useful application. Currently, indoor localization is one of the useful applications that many researchers are doing the researches and developments. Indoor localization can be widely used in many areas such as shopping malls, campuses and hospitals. With the commercial potentials and localization technologies in the market, it makes indoor localization an interesting technology to research and develop. The objective of this project is to design and implement a server-client based localization system to locate mobile users in both indoor and outdoor environment. Indoor positioning will be calculated by using Fingerprint method and Received Signal Strengths (RSS) from surrounding access points. Outdoor positioning will be calculated by using Bluetooth GPS devices. In addition, the localization system shall be able to serve multiple users and have a storage system to store all the fingerprint data for indoor positioning. We have successfully implemented a server-client based localization system. It is capable of locating the user’s indoor/outdoor location and plotting it onto a map. It also allows multiple users to login to the server and exchange their location information. A database system is designed and implemented on the server system. The database contains information of all mobile users and the fingerprint locations. The results of the localization system show that it has an error distance of 5 meters for outdoor environment and 15 meters for indoor environment. Lastly, the recommendation of future enhancement is stated at the end of the report.
