Summary: | The application of temporary protective coatings on glass surface is important for reducing damage and increasing yield because glass manufacturing industries today face a complex, global and increasingly competitive environment. There is an increasing demand to improve the effectiveness of the production process at minimal cost. To create and sustain competitive advantage, enterprises are looking into glass coating that can provide the mechanical strength to resist scratches and also easy to wash away. By having such a coating, it can minimise the losses of production due to scratches and breakage.
In this work, we are looking into water-soluble polymer coating. We will show the polymer solution preparation steps and the evaluation of the coating solution. The chosen method of coating is dip-coating as it is the least complex method. Dendrimer is seen to have a great potential in this area, as synthesising dendrimer molecules with the desired properties will greatly improve the efficiency of glass coating. Since the application of dendrimer molecule in this area is a new, it has many uncertainties. Thus, in this work, we explored the possibility of forming a dendritic hydrophilic surface on silica nanoparticles using the reaction, mixture of (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane and diethanolamine. This reaction mixture, at 1:2 molar ratio, does not form a precipitate or solidify. After mixing the reaction mixture with aqueous silica sol and ethanol at different concentration, application on the glass surface and drying to form gel was done. There is positive indication that the surface modification of silica did happen as planned.
Further studies are recommended to investigate on the extent of reactions taking place in our solution mixture. In addition, varying the reaction conditions can be done to further enhance the properties of our coating solution mixture. |
